Lunapics

Hi, I'm Morgan, I'm a fangeek, and I live with ADHD and a therapy cat called Luna.

Okay, home juiced POG is delicious! But, we have got to find a better source for passion fruit and guava than Uwajimaya. Anyone in the PDX area know some good fruit sources?

Juicer Stuff

So, for the last couple of months I have become a juicing fiend. It’s quadrupled our veggie intake, helped to reduce some of my sugar cravings, and has helped Monster to cut his soda intake. I’ve been meaning to do posts every day on the juices we make, but, well, I have ADHD and, LOOK! BUNNIES!

Anyway, here’s some of the stuff we’ve been juicing:

Kale
Spinach
Chard
Arugula
Parsley
Fennel
Beets
Carrots
Tomatoes
Celery
Peppers
Mangos
Papaya
Pineapples
Apples
Blueberries
Strawberries
Lemons
Oranges
Limes
Ginger
Pears

I have loved most of it, honestly, much more than I even expected to, and I recommend it for everyone. A couple of notes though: I do not recommend juicing mangoes or papayas. The extractor destroys their delicate tastes. They do much better in smoothies. Also, I would only recommend juicing berries if your extractor has a motor control. I do mine on the very lowest setting, and I actually juice everything on a lower setting than recommended and get better results for it.

I would love to hear feedback from other juicers! Got any favorite blends or things to do with leftover pulp? Anything else I should be juicing?

another perspective on smoothies

veganliciouslj:

Though Happy Herbivore (& Drs Esselstyn & Campbell) make awesome and valid points about whole foods vs processed, other doctors have a different perspective on smoothies. Check out this link from my own personal nutrition guru, Vegan Epicurean. It’s well documented with tons of research (15 endnotes!) and focuses on how smoothies can indeed be healthy (because sometimes (not always, nothing is ever always), they really are not—it has a lot to do with what ingredients (and how much of said ingredients) are going into your smoothies…focus on kale, y’all, KALE!).

Not just kale! It is delicious and nutritious, but so are other greens. Try adding spinach, parsley, chard, and beet greens to your smoothies and juices too. Drink your greens, kids!
